Devendar Singh Rathore

I've spent my career designing for the people and problems — vessel operators running fleets at sea, healthcare providers and patients managing clinical records, ecommerce customers buying products online, everyday banking customers managing their finances on mobile, contractors managing billion-dollar job sites, and IT teams managing enterprise service operations.

Conducted field research in Norway, Switzerland, and Sweden — on-site user interviews and contextual inquiry sessions with vessel operators across three countries.

I grew up in Bikaner drawing on blank paper, making things out of clay, watching "How Do They Do It" and "Factory Made" obsessively. That nothing-to-something moment has excited me since childhood. I just found my way to doing it through software.

My engineering foundation is formal, six years studying computer applications across BCA and MCA. This means I understand how products are built, not just how they look.

Before industry, I spent four years building the product design curriculum from the ground up at Lovely Professional University. Taught 500+ students and evaluated thousands of projects across inaugural Bachelor and Master of Design cohorts, when formal UX design education in India was still finding its feet.

In April 2019 I joined Bluebash as their first designer. I built the design practice from scratch and delivered end-to-end design across multiple products. The most significant was iTrust, an EHR platform for ophthalmology clinics and patients, designed zero to one, currently active in the US market.

In April 2021 I joined Kongsberg Digital, a company I chose deliberately because the problems were hard and the users were unlike anyone else I'd designed for. The vessel operators with 20+ years at sea, solving problems software had hardly reached. What I found when I arrived was maritime design that was requirement-driven and siloed. Static screens handed to developers with no research, no prototypes, no cross-team involvement. I rebuilt it from the ground up — introducing research strategy, interactive prototyping, design systems discipline, structured handoffs, and direct access to VP-level stakeholders.

"Taking design from the last voice in the room to the first."

The proof of that transformation was Vessel Performance Merchant. The research I led reframed what the product needed to be, shifting it from a compliance reporting tool to a performance monitoring and decision support product, a decision that became the commercial anchor for 650+ vessel onboardings and 450+ active users, reaching global operators including MSC, Hoegh, Frontline, and Terntank.

In May 2025, I presented at the OpenBridge Design System workshop at the Oslo School of Architecture and Design — a session on Triton Design System approach and best practices.

That same instinct follows me outside work too, building from nothing. I cook and bake, same instinct but different kitchen.

Hackathon Q3 2024

Kongsberg Digital, Bangalore

AIVolution Creative Genius Award - August 2024

In August 2024, I took part in AIVolution, an internal hackathon at Kongsberg Digital themed around AI. The challenge was to build something agent-based that added AI capability to an existing product.

I led the interaction experience and interface design of an AI-powered feature for prompt-based data visualization, built on top of Vessel Performance Merchant (VPM). Users could type a natural language prompt and receive a visualization, e.g fuel consumption, generated by a backend agent that translated the request into a chart or data view, without manual configuration.

My team won the Creative Genius Award, with a cash prize of INR 25,000.

After the hackathon, I validated the concept with VPM users, mapping it against real fleet-monitoring needs. The feature has since been integrated into the product and is currently in beta with 4 vessels, giving operators a faster way to query and visualize performance data without navigating fixed dashboards.
